Concrete Flatwork in Chicago Ridge, Grounded in Good Stone
Even the simplest slab deserves straight lines, a gentle pitch and a firm stone bed, so it stays neat and level for the long run.
The Humble Slab, Done With Care
Flatwork rarely gets admired, yet it frames so much of daily life around a home: the pad where the grill or the air conditioner sits, the apron that welcomes the car into the garage, the quiet rectangle of concrete beneath a garden shed. When these pieces are crisp and level they disappear into a tidy property, and when they tilt, crack or collect puddles they draw the eye for all the wrong reasons. Our approach begins well below the surface. We excavate past the topsoil and any loose fill until we reach soil that will not compress, because the clay common around Chicago Ridge holds water and shifts with each freeze and thaw. Into that excavation goes crushed stone, spread and tamped in thin lifts until the bed is uniformly firm. Forms are then staked with a measured fall so rain slips off one edge rather than pooling or seeping beneath. Slabs that will bear weight, an apron above all, receive reinforcement suspended within the concrete where it can do its job. After the pour, the surface is given a texture suited to its role, joints are cut along lines that look deliberate, and the slab is kept damp and sheltered while it cures. Then the forms are lifted, earth is feathered against the new edges and every scrap of demolished concrete departs on our truck.
Every Flatwork Project Includes
Whatever the size, these details shape a slab that looks right and stays right.
Removal of tired concrete
Broken or sunken slabs demolished and carted away when replacing.
Excavation to stable soil
Loose earth cleared until the ground beneath will not settle.
A tamped stone bed
Crushed stone spread and compacted in thin lifts for even support.
A measured fall
Forms pitched so rainwater has a graceful path off the slab.
Suspended reinforcement
Steel held within slabs that carry weight, such as garage aprons.
A texture with purpose
Broomed for grip outdoors, smoother beneath sheds and equipment.
Joints that look intended
Cut along tidy lines so shrinkage stays hidden in the grooves.
A sheltered cure
Kept damp and covered so the surface stays tight and even.
From Bare Ground to Finished Slab
Plan the shape and the fall
We study the spot, discuss what the slab will hold and outline thickness, stone depth, reinforcement and finish in a written price.
Build the bed
Old concrete leaves, soft soil is excavated, stone is tamped in layers and forms are staked to the planned pitch.
Pour, texture and cure
Concrete is placed, textured and jointed, then sheltered while it strengthens. Forms come away and the surroundings are tidied.
